UFC 120 - Bisping: “I couldn’t care less....

UFC 120 - Bisping: “I couldn’t care less who he trains with.”

Written by Penny Buffington

UFC 120: BISPING vs. AKIYAMA event is taking place Saturday, October 16.  live from the O2 Arena in London, England airing free on Spike TV.

The UFC 120 media conference gave Penny Buffington executive producer of MMA2DAY and other members of the media insight to the thoughts of the main event and co main event fighters from this event.

In attendance: the 2 middleweight fighters from the main event, Michael Bisbing vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama and the co main event, welterweights Carlos Condit vs. Dan Hardy.

Despite the fact Michael Bisping was voted "Coolest Man in the UK" by readers of Zoo magazine and numerous articles describing him as hugely popular in the UK he humbly describes his life in England.

He said “I live in a small town in the northwest of England, and I live with the same, you know, the same friends and family that I’ve grown up with my entire life. So, to be honest, nothing’s changed. You know, when I do venture out into cities and whatnot, yes, people do know who I am, I suppose. But, ultimately, I’m the same guy. I still live in the same place, the same small town, so not a lot’s changed. And because I still live there I’m able to train and just continue with my regular lifestyle.”

Michael "The Count" Bisping, 19 - 3 – 0, trains at The Wolfslair MMA Academy in Widnes, United Kingdom.

Yoshihiro "Sexyama" Akiyama, 13 - 2 – 0, is training out of Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Akiyama revealed he feels like he has a better takedown than Michael Bisping does.

Through his interrupter he elaborated that the confidence comes from training at Jackson’s, “He was able to learn the intricate skills of the takedowns, as well as better striking for MMA. And, most of all, he was able to learn how to deliver a good three rounds of fight in the cage.”

Bisping was apparently unimpressed, “In terms of preparation, it doesn’t change anything. With respect, I couldn’t care less who he trains with. He can train with anyone. What I’m focusing on these days is what I do, focusing on my training. And he can worry about what I’m bringing to the table. And so, you know, as I said, my training’s going fantastic. I feel in great shape. I’ve improved all my areas.”

Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy, 23 - 7 – 0, is associated with Team Rough Houselocated in Sneinton, Nottingham. He is currently ranked by Sherdog as the #4 welterweight fighter in the world. Hardy says of his opponent, “I’m looking forward to taking him down and choking him out.”

Carlos "Natural Born Killer" Condit, 25 - 5 - 0, also trains at the popular camp of Greg Jackson: Jackson's Mixed Martial Arts. Condit is the one who requested a fight with Hardy. His reasoning: “Well, for one, Hardy’s got status in the UFC right now. He was the number one contender. So a win over him would, you know, probably catapult me up the rankings.”

Sometimes the most revealing things are said after the conference is over. As the operator announced to President of the UFC UK division all questions had been asked by the media Dan and Carlos had a little more to add:

Dan Hardy: “Get on the plane, Carlos. Get on that plane, man. Look forward to it.”

Carlos Condit: “Do it.”

Dan Hardy: “So I can knock you out.”

Interview with Cung Le

Cung Le is a Man of Many Talents

Interview with Cung Le by Penny Buffington

The multi-talented Cung Le discusses his decision to give up his belt in order to concentrate on his acting career. “I decided to vacate my belt. I have been out of action in the cage for the last 17 months. I felt like the right thing to do- the honorable thing to do- is to vacate the belt so the top competitors in the Strikeforce middleweight division could compete for the actual belt, not the interim belt. Because I don’t feel that it is right for me to keep doing movies while everyone is waiting around or fighting for an interim belt. I sat down with my promoter Scott Coker and we worked it out.”

Coming to the decision was not easy especially considering his long standing relationship with Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. “It was a very difficult decision. I have been fighting and competing in martial arts since 1994. I turned pro in 1998. I have been with Scott Coker since 1998 when I signed with him. He put me on ESPN 2 on Strikeforce Kickboxing and made me fight for titles in super fights. Also we went over to K1 USA to do super fights and then when he opened up the mixed martial arts Strikeforce division I was part of his first show and my last show with him was against Frank Shamrock.”

“Just because I vacated the belt does not mean I am retiring I plan to come back early next year. With everything that has been going on with me the last year and a half I have been able to do movies at the same time fight but as the parts get bigger and the rolls get more demanding I came to that fork in the road where I basically had to make a decision and my decision right now is to strike while the iron is hot and do the best I can do in the world of entertainment, movies and stuff.”

In fact one such movie Cung is in, Pandorum will be released this Fri. September 25, 2009.  Le explains, “Basically the movie starts in this massive space ship. The 2 min. trailer talks about there are 60 thousand people and 500 years. It’s like a Noah’s Ark going to a livable planet. They have every nationality on this ship in sleep chambers that will keep them young and healthy so when they do get there they will wake everyone up and re-building begins. But, somewhere along the lines during that time frame people start waking up and the 2 crew members Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster when they wake up they think they are alone. They don’t remember anything of what they were supposed to have done because they have been asleep so long. So Dennis Quaid is guiding Ben Foster through the vents. Along the way Foster notices there are other people and craziness going on and I save them in my opening scene and we team up and we explore the ship.”

Obviously Cung Le did not just walk on to a set and snatch up a movie roll without putting in a whole lot of effort. “I have been taking acting lessons since 1998 off and on. I have gotten more serious in the last 2 years. I have been working with private acting coaches. I knew when I got the part in Pandorum that it was going to be no easy task. Most of my scenes were shared with Ben Foster. My manager told me he has known Ben since he was 17 and they call him the scene stealer as you can see in Alpha Dog and 3:10 to Yuma he stole the show from whoever he shared the screen with and I did not want that to happen to me. I made sure that even for the audition I had time to prepare for it. I trained just like I would be training for a fight. Morning and night putting myself on tape, getting with my private acting coach and doing scene study. When I got to the audition I knocked my audition out of the park and they cast me for a roll that was supposed to be Japanese. They couldn’t find the right Japanese so they opened it to all Asians and I beat out all the top Asian actors that went out for the part. The director Christian Alvart told me a lot of people auditioned. I was excited and I knew that was just the beginning of a lot of really hard work because now it’s “go time”. I get to go toe to toe with Ben Foster so it was pretty awesome.” You can view a complete list of movies Cung Le has been in and will be in the coming year at: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1087183/

As with many professionals Le has a family he has to distribute his time to as well. “I have 2 boys, Cung Michael is 8 and Anthony Ryan is now 4. I got married in August to Susan. She was my rehab therapist before we started dating. I had a major hamstring injury. She was the therapist at Score Clinic. We became friends and one thing lead to another and now we are married.”

Cung Le may have given up his Strikeforce middleweight title spot but they will never actually take his belt.  He told me, “They make new belt every time lucky for me I have a nice Strikeforce Middleweight belt really no one can ever take.”

“When I come back I plan to be in the best shape and hopefully not to have too much rust. I will take it one day at a time one fight at a time and one movie at a time right now it is all about promoting Pandorum.  I’ve got a few days before it gets released and Overture Films was kind enough to do a little premiere in San Jose for me at the AMC Mercado. They added a Q&A after for the media. It starts at 11:30.” Media please contact AMC Mercado for the date.

Here are 5 things you may not know about Mr. Le “I think I’m a funny guy.  I let my sons win every day when we play either baseball or football. I have sweet tooth for chocolate. I am grateful everyday I wake up. I’m a Round 5 -series 4 -action figure. It’s pretty cool”

Wrapping up the interview Cung thanks his supporters. “Thank you for all your support and for sticking by me. When I come back I will make sure that I am in shape. I always come in ready to fight; and win, lose or draw I will be ready to put them spinning back kicks with full affect when I get back into the cage.”

Dan Henderson, Cung Le, "Shogun" Rua, Matt Serra

Dan Henderson, Cung Le, "Shogun" Rua, Matt Serra Join Round 5 for Expanded "Series 4" July Release

Four Champions Plus Carano, Fedor to Comprise Six-Figurine Set; Series 3 Now Scheduled for Late May Release

MARKHAM, Ontario, Canada, April 22, 2009 – Four of the most popular and accomplished champions in mixed martial arts, Dan Henderson, Cung Le, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Matt Serra, have partnered with Round 5, the leading producer of MMA collectibles, to create figurines that will be included in an expanded Series 4, it was announced today by Barron Lau, Round 5 CEO and co-founder and Damon Lau, president and co-founder.  The series, scheduled to be available at retail in July in time for UFC 100, will include the four plus fellow superstars Fedor Emelianenko and Gina Carano.

Round 5 also confirmed today that Series 3, which features Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski, “Big John” McCarthy, Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira, will be in stores across North America and at online outlets including www.Round5MMA.com in late May, about a month behind its original schedule.

“With six figurines, Series 4 will be our largest issuance to date,” said Damon Lau.  “Adding four more of the biggest names in the sport – with wide fan bases – to what began as an already stacked set is huge for Round 5 and a great opportunity for fans to quickly add to their collections.”

To date, Round 5 has issued two Series of four athletes each:   Randy Couture, Matt Hughes, Quinton ‘Rampage' Jackson and Tito Ortiz comprised Series 1 while Rich Franklin, Sean Sherk, Anderson Silva and Wanderlei Silva were released in Series 2.  Series 3 had been planned for an April release, but has been delayed by about four weeks.

“The Series 3 prototypes have been completed and are currently in production,” said Lau.  “It took a little longer than we had originally anticipated, but we feel that the finished product is well worth the extra wait.”

Henderson, the last man to hold the welterweight and middleweight titles for PRIDE, has a 24-7-0 career MMA record, competing against many of the best in MMA.  “Hollywood” defeated Wanderlei Silva to take his final PRIDE crown, then rejoined the UFC, where he has won his last two bouts.  He leads Team USA in Season 9 of The Ultimate Fighter television program and will fight fellow coach Michael Bisping at UFC 100 on July 11 in Las Vegas.

Though he has competed for years in the Chinese martial art of Sanshou, the South Vietnamese native Le gained fame in North America by defeating legendary Frank Shamrock via TKO last year in San Jose, Calif., where he trains.  Le is unbeaten (6-0) in his MMA career and has begun a career in acting, with several feature films nearing international release.

The Brazilian star Rua, known the world over as “Shogun,” boasts and 18-3 record, last week recording a first-round knockout over Chuck Liddell at UFC 97.  He is a former PRIDE champion, winning the Grand Prix title in 2005 with wins over Quinton Jackson, Rogerio Minotoro Nogueira and Ricardo Arona.

Serra, a Long Island, N.Y., native, has compiled a 9-5 MMA mark, earning  international acclaim following his first-round TKO of Georges St. Pierre in their first meeting in 2007 for the UFC welterweight championship.  St. Pierre won the rematch last year, and Serra is next scheduled to battle Matt Hughes at UFC 98 in May.  A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master, Serra also gained fame as the winner of Season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Round 5 collectible figures may be purchased at leading retailers such as Toys ‘R’ Us, FYE, Century Martial Arts, Sunrise Records, The Treadmill Factory and Hatashita International.  Other retailers can be found at www.round5mma.com/wheretobuy.php.
